Colorado Buffalo Wildlife Photography
Wildlife Photography: Colorado
Buffalo buffalo, what in the world is a buffalo? "Home, home on the range... where the deer and the --", wait, that's antelope. Is it the same thing as a bison? So, what's a bison, then? Images come to mind of horses and the wild west and bow and arrows... and wide open spaces?... y'all, I just don't know. This is not my world.
I was approached to do a different kind of project back in May: to photograph buffalo! But not regular ole buffalo, these are special. These guys are apparently the direct descendants of the last wild herd in America. They are frequently seen grazing along an exit off of I-70, close to my client's home.
I was really unsure of how this session was going to happen. I had not done a lot of wildlife photography, but it's rare that I turn down a project. First I imagined being able to get super close to them, and then I saw myself being trampled. Upon arrival, I was relieved when I saw the fence that separated myself from these massive beasts. But then, I realized that it wouldn't take much for a curious buffalo to bring down a chain link fence. So my clients and I were cautious.
These guys were so interesting to watch! At the time we went, the weather was warm and the buffalo were shedding their shaggy winter coats. They were looking pretty rough and ragged, the hair just barely hanging on. The red calves were very playful, frolicking in the long grass together, while the adults were slow and mainly focused on grazing.
So, apparently, all American buffalo are actually bison. Early settlers called the bison "bufello" because they looked so similar and the name buffalo stuck. Buffalo are actually Asian or African. The more you know.
