Lifestyle Photography: Guitar Lessons

Lifestyle has become a very popular genre of photography, where the photographer aims to capture subjects in real-life situations, telling a story in an artistic way.  Wikipedia defines lifestyle as “the art of the everyday”, sort of the middle ground between photojournalism and portraiture.  Photojournalism is the documentation of current events through pictures to tell a news story and it is completely un-staged, un-posed, and raw.  On the other hand, in portraiture, the photographer is in complete control of the light, the posing and direction of the session.

Lifestyle features a little bit of both.  The photographer spends time with their subjects, finding the authentic connection and emotion during interactions and the situations that arise.  These sessions are generally un-posed, but they can be directed.  Lifestyle photographers need to be skilled at shooting in various types of light conditions, from bright direct light to low light.  Each has its own set of challenges.

My younger son, Aidan, has been really into music since he received a drum set for Christmas two years ago. He’s been taking weekly lessons and has become quite the drummer. R decided they should learn to play guitar together. The two of them have been spending weekend nights together, learning the cords and putting it together with drums. I love watching them spend time together, and as you can see, I’m not the only one loving it.
