Photography: Mardi Gras 2015
Growing up in uptown New Orleans, I didn't know that Mardi Gras was a super special thing. I thought everyone got 3 days off of school to attend parades. A lot of people have a misconception of what Mardi Gras is, and ideas of what New Orleans is. The truth is that Mardi Gras is whatever you make it to be. If you want a crazy time, you can certainly find it.
We bring our children to the parades. There are many family-friendly areas along the parade routes. We have several old family friends whose houses we can use for bathroom breaks and rest. We ride the streetcar down to Napolean and walk from there. I love the smell of metal arcing from the streetcar. To me, that is the smell of New Orleans. We sit next to a variety of people, of all colors, ages, races, religions, everyone dressed up in their favorite gawdy costume. Sequins, sparkles, face paint, wigs, from elaborate to simple. Everyone is in a good mood, everyone is going parading!
Photography is difficult, because I baby my camera so much, but I managed to bring it to a few parades and get some shots of my boys having a blast! I wasn't able to get too many shots of costumes and the other shenanigans that are common on Mardi Gras, since I was busy babying the camera and running after my 2 boys.
